In Minnesota, there are for level of offenses in criminal state court. A Petty Misdemeanor, (example: speeding ticket) is punishable up to a fine in the amount of $300. The next higher level offense is a Misdemeanor (example: first time DUI). The maximum punishment for a misdemeanor offense is 90 days in jail and a $3,000 fine. Next is a Gross Misdemeanor (example: 2nd DUI). The maximum punishment for a gross misdemeanor is up to 364 days in jail and a $3,000 fine. Finally, the highest level offense is a Felony (example: Sex crimes, Drug offenses). The maximum punishment for a felony can include years of prison time and fines in the thousands of dollars.
